Orthodox churches on Methana

As everywhere in Greece, Orthodoxy is the predominant Christian religious group on Methana. Since about AD 1000 there are the first early Christian ruins on Methana. Many chapels were built in the Byzantine period, a few of which can still be discovered in their original state. Particularly beautiful examples are the chapels at Kounoupitsa, Agios Joannis and especially Agios Dimitrios and in the valley above Megalochori the Panagitsa chapel. All of these chapels are decorated with ancient frescoes that are also special in Greece.
Most of the other chapels and churches were mostly built around 1830 and are much simpler than their Byzantine predecessors. In the 1960s, many churches and chapels were "modernized" with concrete. They lost their original beauty. In recent years, there is a trend that continues to rob the chapels of their originality.
