Safety on Methana Hello! It is very sad that we had two people being killed by volcanic gas in the thermal spring of the "baths of Pausanias". I told many times my friends in Methana that there is a safety problem with moffeta. Today the worst happened (2.8.2009) and two persons were killed. It is a reason, why I have to add this area on my websites. Samples: 1. Cave "Spileo ton Peristerion" Even there is a sign towards the cave at the Steno Isthmus before you arrive at Methana town, this cave is not accessable for public. It is a rocky, dangerous place only for mountain climbers and speleologists! It is NO target for mass tourism! 2. The historic volcano at Kameni Hora The volcano at Kameni Hora village is surely a highlight on Methana, but even there you have to be careful. If you are not fit to climb up a steep path and if you do not wear walking boats - keep out and enjoy the view from the village! And this beautyful place should NOT be developed for mass-tourism, but it should be controlled and saved! 3. Methana Volcanic Spa Even in the baths you have to be careful and before you use them, you have to visit a local doctor! 4. Walking pathsThere are about 60 km walking paths on Methana. But to use them you have to be trained for steep paths and you NEED walking boots. Also water and first aid kit should be in your backpack. 5. Snakes & Scorpions There are vipers (snake) and scorpions on Methana, but if you behave in a careful way, there will be never a danger (long trousers!).6. RoadsNo road on Methana (and Greece generally) is really safe. So - drive always careful and without any alcohol!7. SeaThere are no real dangerous animals in the area. Sharks are far out in the sea and do not come close to the coast. Just do not swim out far and not at heavy sea. |
